Momentum

Momentum is a key metric for measuring the current popularity and trending potential of a YouTube video. High momentum indicates that the video is currently experiencing a surge in interest. Low momentum on the other hand, indicates that the video is currently not experiencing much interest. Momentum is typically measured by looking at the number of views per hour for a video (VPH).

Momentum is a valuable metric because YouTube viewer preferences are constantly changing, making recent data the most accurate reflection of current trends. A video with strong momentum might signal a trend breaking out or capture a moment of heightened interest around a particular topic or event.

Momentum gives us an indication of the immediate interest for a video, but says little about it’s long-term potential. It could be a trend that will soon fade, or it can be a trend that evolves into a more sustained video market. The typical example is a trending news story, a celebrity's recent actions, or a viral challenge.

High momentum is especially useful for YouTubers that practice YouTube automation since they are typically using trends to hunt as many views as possible. However, they can also highlight topics that are especially sought after, which can be valuable for traditional YouTubers as well.

Using momentum is like sailing with the wind; if there’s no wind, it will be a slow travel, but with wind you travel with ease. The same goes for the views on your videos: use momentum to build fast traction.

Note: If you are a traditional YouTube channel that are trying to build an audience, make sure to make the trend compatible with your channel offering. Learn more here why long-term traditional YouTubers should be careful with using trends.
